The story continues from ne0704.
1 ¶ And the rulers of the people dwelt at Jerusalem: the rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts to dwell in other cities. |
Rulers.
The city was already the home of nobles
and chiefs so Nehemiah looked to other classes for people to live in the
city
ne0216,
ne0517.
Cast lots This method of making choices when decisions depended on more than human wisdom and because the Lord was more directly in charge pr1633. Also see beginning at the following verses: jo0716, 1sa1019, nu2655, 1ch2405. Holy city It was time to remember that the presence of God was again important for the city. The city had been called this before is4802, is5201, da0924, jl0317. The city that is to come down as the bride of the Lamb — the holy people — will also take this name. The imagery is drawn, in part, from the story here. Then when sin and sinners are destroyed, we will be established after returning from our long exile from the Garden of Eden just as the captives from Babylon returned re2102. |
| 2 And the people blessed all the men, that willingly offered themselves to dwell at Jerusalem. | In a good spirit. |
| 3 Now
these are the chief of the province that dwelt in Jerusalem: but in the
cities of Judah dwelt every one in his possession in their cities, to wit,
Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the Nethinims, and the children
of Solomon's servants.
.4 And at Jerusalem dwelt certain of the children of Judah, and of the children of Benjamin. Of the children of Judah; Athaiah the son of Uzziah, the son of Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalaleel, of the children of Perez; .5 And Maaseiah the son of Baruch, the son of Colhozeh, the son of Hazaiah, the son of Adaiah, the son of Joiarib, the son of Zechariah, the son of Shiloni. |

3 - Israel Those of the tribes other than the tribe of Levi. 3 - Nethinims See on ez0243. Also v21. 5 - Shiloni In OT times, only the consonants were used in writing. Around the time of Christ, tiny marks were added to represent the vowels. With vowel changes, this word may be "Shelanites" since Jews (of Judah) would not have normally been from Shilomi, a city in the north. Of course it doesn't matter. Shelanites would have been descendants of Shelah, Judah's third son nu2620. |
| 6 All the sons of Perez that
dwelt at Jerusalem were four hundred threescore and eight valiant men.
.7 And these are the sons of Benjamin; Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah, the son of Kolaiah, the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ithiel, the son of Jesaiah. 8 And after him Gabbai, Sallai, nine hundred twenty and eight. .And Joel the son of Zichri was their overseer: and Judah the son of Senuah was second over the city. |
