His Coming Foretold

The Old Testament, which contains the writings of Moses, the rulers of Israel, and the prophets, was completed around 450 years before Jesus was born. In its pages, there are over 300 prophecies concerning the coming Messiah, covering His ministry and such details as the place of His birth.

For example, the prophet Micah prophesied, "But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting." (Micah 5:2). The story of Jesus' birth recorded in the New Testament reveals that Jesus was born in Bethlehem after Mary and Joseph had to travel to the place of Joseph's birth for the Roman census. (Matthew 2:1-6).

In another example, Zechariah the prophet foretold that the Messiah would come into Jerusalem, bringing salvation, riding upon a donkey (Zechariah 9:9). In Matthew's book in the New Testament, we find the story of Jesus entering into Jerusalem, riding upon a donkey, as the people waved palm branches and shouted praises unto Him. (Matthew 21:1-11).

More than 300 prophecies, such as these two examples, were fulfilled by Jesus Christ through His life, ministry, death and resurrection. The chances of only one person fulfilling just 8 of these 300 prophecies is almost 1 in 1 quadrillion! The chance of fulfilling 48 of these 300 prophecies would be 1 in 10 to the 157th power. The chance for a person to fulfill all 300 prophecies is considered an impossibility. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that no ordinary man could have fulfilled all of these prophecies unless He was indeed God.
